Wilderness First Aid for the real world outdoorsman
This book is a comprehensive guide to First Aid in the wilderness. It points out many injuries and illnesses that you'd commonly find while in the wilderness, and easy-to-follow explainations of what they are, what caused them, how to prevent them, and how to treat them. This is perfect for a Boy Scout or Girl Scout class in First Aid for an upcoming trip; as I use it as the text for the class I teach.
The only area I would say that it is lacking in is the serious, life-threatening injuries, ie cardiopulmonary arrest, tension pneumothorax, etc. However, to be perfectly honest, in the wilderness, injuries like that are very difficult to survive if you are not easily acessable by EMS. Additionally, those injuries are complex, and the treatments aren't always easy to do in the wilderness, much to the contrary, in fact. So understanding them might be important to the field leader, but I don't dwell on the severe injuries too much when I teach because they are difficult to understand, and the treatment is always "Get them to an ambulace and to a hospital as fast as you can."

I highly recommend this book for all Wilderness First aid, and for Mountaineering First Aid.

Excellant Comprehensive Basic and Advanced First Aid Book
This is an excellant book especially if you have no experience at all in dealing with emergancy first aid. It give clear, consice information on everything from simple to complete lacerations, emergancy child birth to what to have in a First Aid Kit. Extremely well written and easy to understand.

Afghanistan
Published in Hardcover by Umbrage Editions Inc (01 October, 2001)
Author: Chris Steele-Perkins
Average review score:

The Spectre Of An Ancient Time
In this exceptional volume Chris Steele-Perkins has distilled four separate travel adventures into an enormously effective photo-essay depicting Afghanistan at a time when the now ignominious Taliban were just taking hold of and consolidating their political power (c.1995). Although the book has as its focus unending war and the horrendous impact interminable armed conflict has had on the people of Afghanistan, what is remarkable in Steele-Perkin's work is how the daily pulse of ordinary life lived within a landscape of devastation and ruin manages consistently to emerge through the gloom. Because these wonderfully evocative images are indeed full of life! And full of the great beauty and mystery of the Afghan people. Two written essays (one by the photographer is a splendid travelogue) complement perfectly this accomplished portfolio of haunting images.

After the Paperman Comes
Published in Paperback by Writers Club Press (December, 2002)
Author: Heywood Steele
Average review score:

Unrelenting Suspense Paired With Wry Humor
Heywood Steele's second novel is not just an average serial killer thriller, but a story of one man's psychological breakdown as he trails his missing wife. Steele's prose has improved by light years and he easily surpasses his brilliantly hilarious first novel as he brings back some of the same characters and introduces a few new ones.

We have the return of Dorf Brentson, ex-private detective who takes a case to help out a stranger in need and ends up losing his wife in a stakeout gone awry. He teams up with the ghost of his best friend, Clay Shelborn, and an exotic dancer named Karma Sutra, and the results are sometimes riotous, sometimes tearjerking. Steele also introduces a paranormal side to the equation. We get a glimpse of the afterlife and an immortal named Krenshaw, who does all he can to help save the life of Dorf's wife. There is also a subplot about a lonely couple who share a macabre and somewhat gothic love affair with a conclusion that will leave you speechless. This is a story you don't want to miss.

The four short stories included at the end are amusing and fast paced reads. SEE a day in the life of a Grim Reaper! SEE the fight against an underground organization known as CHAD! SEE the origins of singer Johnny Reno! EXPLORE the buxom breasts of a damsel in distress! It's all here, ladies and gentlemen! Some of them have been published before but if you haven't read them, now is your chance!

All American Alien Boy: The United States As Science Fiction, Science Fiction As a Journey; A Collection
Published in Paperback by Ace Books (October, 1997)
Author: Allen Steele
Average review score:

Down to Earth stories set in a science fictional backdrop
Allen Steele, well known for his novels The Jericho Iteration and The Tranquility Alternative shows us where his true talents lie...the short story/novella. This collection is full of insightful short fiction which uses science fiction not as a driving force behind the story, but rather as a backdrop. From the story "Lost in the Shopping Mall" which uses VR as the setting for a story about teen angst, to "Hunting Wabbit" in which the fact that the Earth is about to be destroyed is completely ancillary to a story about critics, authors, and the the relationships they share.
Each story is accompanied by the authors musings on his motivations behind the story and it is precisely this that makes this an excellent read even if you've read all the stories contained herein before.

Anna's Garden Songs
Published in Library Binding by Greenwillow (March, 1989)
Authors: Mary Q. Steele and Lena Anderson
Average review score:

"Anna's Garden Songs" great for gardening parents and kids
What a lovely book! The pictures are detailed, accurate and entrancing, and the poems are amusing and show a deep love for gardening and family. Anna, her brother Peter, her friends and her Grandfather have all sorts of fun in the garden and orchard. Usually, each page describes a specific vegetable. My daughter loves the entry on cabbages -- especially Grandfather's rampage on the caterpillars that eat them. "He yelled so loud, he scared the cat!" Read the poems, enjoy the pictures, then go out in the garden and see how they compare to real life. This book is a great way to get little children interested in gardening (we've been borrowing it from the library since my daughter was two, and I'm so glad to see Amazon has it so we can get a copy to keep), and parents won't get bored with it either. The more we read it, the more we love it. Try it out yourself!
